NCSHRM State Council Awards & Scholarships:

Richard "Dick" Peoples Professional of the Year Award

The NCSHRM State Council recognizes one active, NC Chapter Human Resources Professional annually at the NCSHRM State Conference as the Professional of the Year.  This award is given in recognition of this individual’s service to the HR community (State Council, SHRM Chapters, etc.), service to the HR profession, leadership in the business community, and service to the civic community within the past calendar year.  To submit for this award, please click here.


North Carolina Human Resources Professional HALL OF FAME

(Sponsored by Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLP)

The NCSHRM State Council recognizes North Carolina Human Resources Professionals for their outstanding lifetime accomplishments and/or contributions.  This award is given in recognition of their service to the HR profession, leadership in the business community, and service to the civic community. To submit an entry for the Hall of Fame award, click here

Elizabeth Clay Smith Humanitarian Award

(sponsored by Hill, Chesson & Woody)

The Elizabeth ‘Clay’ Smith Humanitarian Award honors a human resources professional who promotes well-being, respect and dignity within their community, while striving to make a lasting difference and to encourage others to do the same.  In so doing, this professional exemplifies compassion, courage and professionalism in the practice of human resources as well as in their personal lives.  To submit a name click here.


Certification/Recertification Assistance Scholarship

William B. Leonard Scholarship
The North Carolina State Council acknowledges that the future of the Human Resource profession lies with the students of today. This scholarship program provides recognition, support, and monetary assistance to a student focusing on Human Resources as a profession.  To find out more, click here.

Distinguished Student Chapter(s) of the Year Award
NCSHRM State Council supports SHRM goals and objectives for Student Chapters and Student Chapter Members. SHRM outlines a plan of action for success through the annual Merit Award program that recognizes student chapters for outstanding activities and programs. To further support and recognize those student chapters that meet the Merit Award criteria outlined by the Society, the State Council recognizes those Distinguished Student Chapters annually. 

Distinguished North Carolina Student Chapter(s) that receive Merit Award status from SHRM will receive $150.00 to be used for student chapter purposes. Distinguished chapters will also be recognized at the NCSHRM State Conference.

Jan Sharp Memorial Scholarship

The North Carolina State Council acknowledges that the future of the Human Resource profession lies with the students of today. Chapter Awards
Robert F. McLain HR Professional of Year

The Robert F. McLain award recognizes an Association member for his/her outstanding service to the Chapter, to the Human Resources profession, and to the Community. The award is given in honor of Past President Robert F. McLain, who passed away approximately two months into his term as President. This is the highest achievement and honor presented to a Raleigh-Wake HRMA member by the Chapter and is awarded annually to one member.

Bi-Annual Certification Scholarship

Certification scholarships are for members in good standing and are awarded twice a year -- one in the fall and one in the spring.  Scholarships are available for either HRCI or SHRM certification. To be eligible, you may not be reimbursed for the exam by any other source and must provide proof of passing the exam. The winner will be reimbursed for their certification exam fees and related study materials up to $100.00. E-mail your request and proof of passing the exam to the Certification Director, Aaron Martin.  Winners will be chosen at random by the Awards Committee.  


Annual Professional Tuition Scholarship
To promote continuing education and the importance of an advanced degree, Raleigh-Wake HRMA provides tuition assistance to one eligible member each year. To be eligible, you will need to be a member in good standing, enrolled in a Human Resources advanced degree program, and have a GPA of at least 3.0.  One scholarship is available per year in the amount of $500.  E-mail your request with your class schedule and GPA to the President Elect, Rachel Erpenbach.  Winners may be chosen at random or by merit by the Awards Committee.         


SHRM 2014 Gold EXCEL Award

Our chapter has been awarded the 2014 Gold EXCEL Award.  This award recognizes outstanding achievements in chapter operations and a commitment to providing meaningful programs and services to our members. By achieving this award, our chapter distinguishes itself as an outstanding organization dedicated to serving the needs of our members and to the advancement of the human resource management profession.



SHRM Foundation Chapter Champion 2016
As a result of our Chapter fundraising efforts in 2016, Raleigh-Wake has been designated as a 2016 SHRM Foundation Champion. The support provided by the SHRM chapters and state councils allows the SHRM Foundation to provide opportunities to fellow HR professionals that they may not have had otherwise.  Thank you for your continued support of this important foundation!

SHRM Awards

Michael R. Losey Excellence in HR Research Award 
A single award of $50,000 is presented annually to further the field of human resource management. Nominations are encouraged for scholars with a significant body of work in the field of HR. For more information about the nomination process, please review the Losey Award Flyer.  Application deadline: July 15, 2018.

SHRM Foundation Scholarships for HR Professionals-

In 2018 the SHRM Foundation will award almost $500,000 in support to students seeking undergraduate, graduate, certification, and professional development opportunities. SHRM encourages all eligible SHRM members, student members, Chapters, and State Councils and organizations to apply for one or more of the scholarships listed below!

Advisor of the Year
The SHRM Foundation is once again sponsoring the annual Advisor of the Year Award to be presented to a distinguished student chapter advisor in 2018. The award will recognize the outstanding service and leadership provided to student chapters by SHRM advisors.

The winning advisor will receive:

-A commemorative plaque

-$1,000 cash award
-Complimentary registration to the SHRM Annual Conference & Expo
-Travel funding up to $1,000 to attend the 2018 SHRM Annual Conference

Certification Scholarships
Scholarship: $750 for SHRM Certification exam and/or preparation (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP)

Number: 220 scholarships (20 reserved for members engaged in veterans or aging workforce issues in a professional or volunteer capacity) 

Deadlines: April 10 and October 10, 2018
-Current SHRM member (Professional or student membership must be active when applying and throughout the year in which you receive the award.)
-Meet eligibility requirements for SHRM Certification. 
-Took certification exam in 2017 or plan to sit for exam in next 12 months. 

How to Apply:

-Contact information
-Short answer questions about volunteer/career experience
-Current resume
-One letter of reference (letter may be addressed to the 'SHRM Foundation Scholarship Review Committee' and should provide insight into your character, career and volunteer accomplishments, work ethic, values and need for the scholarship. May be written by work or volunteer colleague,  professor, coach, etc. but should not come from a family member.
