 Legislative and Legal Update: What to Expect in 2019


Please note the 2019 monthly meetings will be held at the NCSU University Club in Raleigh.


The year 2018 was an active one for legislative and legal developments in the area of employment law and employee relations. Employers saw significant developments in the areas of immigration, wage and hour and arbitration agreements.   Sexual harassment prevention and the #MeToo movement also continued to be a hot topic, impacting federal and state initiatives. Pay equity laws were reintroduced at the federal level and passed by a number of states.  In addition, a number of states and localities passed statutes or ordinances mandating sexual harassment prevention training. This session will discuss how these and other changes impact employers going forward and what employers should expect in 2019.

Learning Outcomes:
Participants will leave with a greater understanding of the role the Government Affairs Director plays at Raleigh Metro SHRM, new and proposed legislation that impacts human resource professionals, and other developments in the labor and employment field.

1)    Understand the role of the Government Affairs Director for Raleigh Metro SHRM.

2)    Hear about recent state and federal legislation that impacts human resource professionals.

3)    Learn about pending or proposed legislation for the upcoming year. 

4)    Gain knowledge and understanding of significant legal developments from 2018.

5)    Receive practical guidance for implementing these developments when handling day-to-day employee situations.

The Speaker for this event will be Gina Calabro.

Gina is Raleigh Metro’s Governmental Affairs Director and is an attorney with the Raleigh office of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak and Stewart. She has practiced labor and employment law for over 20 years. Gina concentrates her practice on discrimination and harassment matters, wage and hour claims, and noncompetition and trade secret litigation.  Gina regularly counsels businesses on all aspects of employment law, from recruiting and hiring through termination.
