Does Your Organization Need a Shrink? What IO Psychology Can Do For the Bottom Line and Workforce Development

Industrial/ Organizational Psychology is the application of a scientific approach to workforce problems in organizations. In 2014, it was one of the fastest growing professions according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and yet I often get a blank stare when I mention my profession.

Into the blank stare, I go on to say that as an I-O Psychologist, instead of putting an individual on the couch, I can put a whole organization on the couch, and work through problems that can make a major impact, such as fixing recruiting, workforce performance improvement, engagement, and leadership transformation.

The benefits of this talk are twofold:

1. To educate professionals on an increasingly visible field. They may want to focus their future education there or hire their next internal expert with this education and background.

2. To touch on a few I/O Psychology solutions that impact the bottom line:

1.     Fixing the skills gap with internal skills development

2.     Applying a strategic training program to make an impact on a business need

3.     Setting up a hiring and onboarding program specifically designed to improve retention

4.     Transforming leadership with development strategies that change behavior

Application for participants on the Job:

Develop clarity of how I/O Psychology can favorably impact recruiting, performance management, training/onboarding, leadership development.

Analyze specific organizational weaknesses and identify specific problem areas where you can apply organizational psychology for improvement.
