Community Services
A life that lives is a life that gives - VOLUNTEER!
RWHRMA members live and work within the local community and are involved in many ways.
Community Services Overview:
The Community Services Committee leads the Chapter efforts in community service projects, initiatives, and partnerships. Effective in 2007, the Board of Directors appointed a Community Services Director. The Director and committee members research and recommend potential community service projects for the Chapter to provide a means for our membership to use their talent, skills, and energies as HR professionals to give back to the community. In addition to community services projects, we make chapter members aware of community organizations that would be beneficial to HR professionals or businesses.
Current Chapter-Supported Community Projects:
RWHRMA is currently collecting donations at its monthly meetings for:
- The Healing Place of Wake County - Toiletries and men’s/women’s/children’s clothing needed for homeless people in the Healing Place's continuing mutual-help program. Even travel-size toiletry items you receive from your hotel stays are welcome.
- Dress for Success Triangle NC - Career development books and literature needed for the new career library in Raleigh. Bring books on resume writing, interviewing skills, career planning, discovering strengths, etc.
Other Ways to Get Involved in Our Community:
- Would You Walk 2 Miles to Save a Life? Join us in the fight against blood cancer! The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Eastern NC Chapter has its annual Light the Night Walk in Raleigh Oct 9, 2010 and in Durham Oct 21, 2010. HR professionals are invited to join the walk as an individual or form a team. We are also seeking volunteers to help facilitate both the Raleigh and Durham Walks. Duties can include registration, set-up, clean-up, cheer-stations, balloon-inflation, kids' area, etc. For more details, see www.LightTheNight.org/nce or contact Emily Roland at emily.roland@lls.org.
- Love animals? Would you like to use your HR training skills to benefit the homeless animals of Wake County? Now you can! The HR Committee of the SPCA of Wake County wants to help alleviate some of the compassion fatigue that inevitably affects SPCA employees at one time or another. We want to do this by offering a free lunch and learn series to employees. We are seeking volunteers to lead these sessions. Some ideas (but please don’t let this limit your creative thinking) could be: healthy living/wellness, time management, stress reduction, effective communication, relationship building, technology training, management training, problem-solving. To learn more about this volunteer opportunity, contact Rachel Wilson at rachel@rachelwilson.com. SPCA of Wake Co website: http://www.spcawake.org.
Past Community Projects:
- The Community Services Small Business Committee held a free Small Business Workshop on May 18. Attendees learned how to manage risk and avoid pitfalls in recruiting, hiring, and separating employees, as well as best practices in managing and retaining talented employees.
- RWHRMA, Triangle SHRM, and WRAL joined forces on March 3 to hold a televised "HR on Call" event. Approximately 1000 callers received guidance from RWHRMA and TSHRM chapter volunteers regarding various HR questions such as job search resources, resume writing, interviewing, training, and unemployment. Thanks to all of the RWHRMA volunteers to participated to make this a successful event.
