Chapter Leadership

The RWHRMA chapter elects the officers in November for the following calendar year. It is the incoming president's responsibility to appoint the additional directors serving on the board.

Currently the board consists of 11 voting members and meets the first Wednesday each month to conduct chapter business.

 

Please note, the RWHRMA chapter is 100% volunteer led. There are no paid staff nor is there a central office or phone number. Various volunteers receive and respond to email inquiries but there may be a delay in response due to scheduling conflicts with work or other obligations. We appreciate your understanding and will respond as soon as possible.

Christy has been a member of Raleigh-Wake since 2008. Since joining Raleigh-Wake, she has served in various leadership roles, most recently as the President-Elect and including VP of Programs, AVP of Programs and Monthly Meeting Chair. Christy has over 13 years of experience in HR field/Management. Currently, she works closely with HR professionals in the employee benefits arena as a Client Manager with Hill, Chesson & Woody, where she helps her clients manage their employee benefits. When not working or volunteering with Raleigh-Wake, Christy enjoys traveling, spending time with family (including her Morkie) and friends, and learning/trying something new...whatever that may be!

 

 

 

Will Barfield - 2017 President-Elect   WillB@frankelstaffing.com


Will is the Senior Director of Business Development for Frankel Staffing Partners.  Now in his 13th year on staff, Will oversees all of Frankel’s outbound business development efforts, functioning as both a producing rep and a manager for Frankel’s growing sales team.  During Will’s time at Frankel, the company has achieved unprecedented growth, setting numerous records for top-line revenue and company profitability. 

Will is very active in the local community, donating his time to several volunteer leadership and outreach capacities beyond Raleigh-Wake Human Resource Management Association.  At present, Will is holding Board seats and/or fundraising responsibilities for the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC, the WakeMed Foundation, Haven House Services and the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce.    

A native North Carolinian, Will has lived in the Wake County area since 1991.  He is a 1998 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a BA degree in Journalism and Mass Communication along with a minor in Business.  Will and his wife, Amy, live in Holly Springs, NC, along with their three daughters, Kirsten, Olivia and Annabella.

 

 

 

John Herath, PHR – 2017 Past President  jherath@orioninternational.com

John has been a member of Raleigh-Wake for 16 years and is currently serving as Past President and the moderator of one of the Executive Think Tanks.  He previously served as Treasurer and on the Strategic Planning Committee.  John grew up in Charlottesville, VA and graduated from Radford University in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (BBA) and a concentration in Human Resources Management.  John also holds a current Professional in Human Resources certification (PHR) from the HRCI and a SHRM-CP certification from SHRM. He has spent the past 20+ years in progressively more responsible Human Resources Management positions for companies in both the manufacturing and service sectors.  John joined Orion International in 1999 as the Human Resources Manager, and was subsequently promoted to Partner and Director of Human Resources for all of Orion’s companies.  John is also the owner of two small businesses:  Safe Ride Home is a designated driver service here in Raleigh, and Tristar provides health insurance coverage to military retirees.  John has been happily married for 16 years to his wife Joanna and they have two German Shepherd Dogs and two large parrots.  John spends most of his free time shooting and serving as Range Master for action pistol and 3-gun competitions across the US.

Heather holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and dual Master’s Degrees in Industrial Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management from Appalachian State University. She is a Certified HR professional and has been a member of RWHRMA for 4 years. Currently, she is an HR Associate at Biologics, Inc. She enjoys spending time with her husband and labradoodle, Cash.

 

Holly E. R. Hammer - 2017 Governmental Affairs Director and Secretary hhammer@hutchlaw.com

Holly’s practice focuses on employment law, human resource management and executive compensation. She helps companies build a solid foundation when hiring employees for the first time and ensures legal compliance in terminations and workplace disputes. She also provides strategic advice and counsel to companies at all stages of growth and acts as general outside counsel to her clients.

She regularly assists companies with employment agreements and severance arrangements, 
workforce restructuring and reductions in force, general contracts and board, consulting and 
advisory agreements, FLSA, Title VII, FMLA/ADA and wage and hour compliance, claims of 
discrimination and harassment, governmental investigations and agency complaints and workplace training and investigations. She also prepares legally complaint policies and procedures, employee handbooks and agreements designed to protect companies against the disclosure of confidential information and trade secrets. Clients say she is “tough” and “knows her stuff.”

Holly was admitted to the California bar in 2003 and to the North Carolina bar in 2011. Holly
received her B.A. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, and her J.D. from the Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, California. She is the Governmental Affairs 
Director for the Raleigh-Wake Human Resource Management Association and is a long-standing member of SHRM. She is also a member of the labor and employment law sections of both the American and North Carolina Bar Associations.

Holly’s hobbies include running, yoga and she recently completed a course on Mindful Based Stress Reduction at Duke Integrative Medicine. She has a pug named Sophie and spends as much time as possible at the beach.

 

Brent Plunkett2017 VP, Programs  brent@charterwm.com

 Brent has been a member of Raleigh-Wake for 3 years and has served on the programs team as the AVP of programs for the past two years. During his time as the AVP of programing Brent assisted in securing speakers and executing the chapter monthly meetings as well as the master series events. Brent grew up in Greensboro and is a graduate of North Carolina State University. Brent is the founder and CEO of Charter Wealth Management an independent investment advisory firm that serves families, corporations, and private foundations. Brent is also the co-owner of Whalewisdom.com a website that provides information on hedge fund investment activity.

Brent lives in Raleigh with his wife Jesse and their two children Ali (5) and Calvin (3). In addition to his volunteer work with Raleigh-Wake Brent has been active with the Raleigh Chamber Young Professional Network, WakeMed Foundation, and has recently started work with the Red Cross Board. Brent serves on the Board of Governors at the City Club Raleigh where he leads the young executives and started the National Public Affairs Forum.

Ashley began her Raleigh-Wake membership as a student and transitioned to a professional member after her graduation from Meredith College. She graduated with a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Human Resources. She is now serving her fourth year as the College Relations Director for Raleigh-Wake and has also assisted the Programs Team as a pseudo webmaster. Ashley received her HRCI Professional in Human Resources certification in 2013 also holds a SHRM- CP. She is currently the Human Resource Manager for McLaurin Parking Company located in downtown Raleigh.

 

Christin Johnson– 2017 VP, Communicationchristinkiel@gmail.com

Christin has a passion for creating highly efficient organizations that employees ENJOY being a part of; this passion has led her through a dynamic career in HR, supporting high tech and consulting firms, primarily through startup and high growth phases. As a graduate of UNC-Greensboro, Christin holds bachelor’s degrees in both Political Science and Communication Studies, as well as PHR and SHRM-CP certifications. Christin currently leads an independent HR consultancy, iStartupHR, LLC, while also serving as the Director of HR & Administration for BlueLine Associates, an award winning Consulting firm that specializes in transforming people, processes, and technology. As a member of RWHRMA since 2008, Christin has been an active volunteer, serving as Membership Administrator, AVP and VP of Membership, and President Elect, President, and Past President. When she is not working, she enjoys traveling the world with her husband, Dave, backpacking mountains across the US, yoga, cooking, and snuggling her fur children, Oliver and Cody.

Jeff received his degree in Journalism from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He started his professional career in the publishing and advertising world and after 8 years, he made a career change. Jeff has been a recruiting leader in the Raleigh/Durham area for 20 years. He has both staffing industry experience and corporate recruiting experience including international recruiting. He has led teams for large hiring projects, niche and specialty roles and executive recruitment. Jeff received a certificate in HR Management from Duke University and has his SPHR and SHRM-SCP. Jeff is currently Senior Director of Talent Acquisition with Alorica, a business process outsourcing company based in Irvine, CA. He leads teams of recruiters throughout the US and internationally (Mexico, Canada, China, Brazil, DR, Jamaica). Previously, he was a Recruiting Manager in Global Talent Acquisition and Staffing with Xerox in the outsource services division and an Area Manager for Kelly Services.
Jeff has been a Board member with Raleigh-Wake HRMA for the past 8 years including Treasurer, President and SHRM Foundation Director. Jeff is also NCSHRM State Council Director for 2016-2017. Jeff co-chaired the Pinnacle award winning HR on Call for RWHRMA and co-chaired the 2011 NCSHRM State Conference. Jeff serves as a Special Expertise Panel member for SHRM. He also volunteers his time each year for the student case competition as a judge.
Jeff’s other passion lies in fitness and nutrition. He is a Level 2 CrossFit Trainer, US Olympic Weightlifting Certified Coach and has a Sports Nutrition certification. He co-owns and coaches at CrossFit Surmount in Apex, NC.
Jeff was appointed by the Wake County Board of Commissioners to serve on the Wake County Council on Fitness and Nutrition. He volunteers on the Advocates for Health in Action Board. He has served on the American Red Cross Board, the Aidswalk Board and the Evening with Friends Board. He is also a Board member with the VA Regional St Leo University Advisory Board.
Jeff has won the NC HR Hall of Fame award, the HR Professional of the Year for Raleigh-Wake HRMA and for NCSHRM. He won SHRMs District Director of the Year Award. Projects he has worked on have been nominated for Pinnacle Awards 4 times. He also has worked on projects for the SHRM Foundation that helped Raleigh-Wake be in the top 10 for last few years.

Molly Lukes has been a member of Raleigh-Wake since 2006. Molly has served in various leadership roles, most recently as the President-Elect and including VP, Membership, AVP, Membership, and SHRM Foundation Director. She has also served on the SHRM Foundation Committee and the Diversity Committee. When not working or volunteering with Raleigh-Wake, Molly volunteers with Change the Triangle, Activate Good, and the Hope Community Church Community Outreach. She also spends time with her husband Josh and her furbaby, Farah. Molly graduated from Catawba College with a major in Industrial Psychology. She has over 14 years of experience in progressive HR roles with both public and privately held companies.

Kristy Dixon has been a member of RWHRMA for twenty-five years.  She is an Assistant Professor at Meredith College where she has taught various human resource classes such as Compensation & Benefits, Employee Relations, Training & Development, Staffing, Human Resource Management, and HR Audit for the past sixteen years.  In 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2015 she was selected as “Teacher of the Year” for the School of Business. 

 

Kristy also works in human resources as a practitioner.  She is President of McLaurin Parking Company and has been employed there for over thirty years. 

 

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a major in Business Administration, Kristy has her Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Meredith College.  She received her SPHR certification (Senior Professional in Human Resources) in 1996.

 

Kristy is active in a number of civic and professional organizations.  She has served as the President of the Raleigh-Wake Human Resource Management Association, Chairman of the Business Advisory Board for Meredith’s School of Business, and Chairman of the Raleigh Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities.   She is currently the Chair of the Employer Resource Committee for the Raleigh Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities. 

 

 

Josh Foster - 2017 Volunteer Director   josh@ptatwork.com

Joshua is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and moved to the Triangle are in 2008.  He received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, Florida.  Josh owns PT at Work, a company that provides on-site physical therapy and wellness programs to employers.  As volunteer director, Josh helps members find opportunities within the chapter to volunteer and connect with both the community and other HR professionals.When not working, Josh enjoys playing drums, basketball, and spending time with his wife and daughter. 

 

 

Beth Shandley2017 Sponsorship Director     bshandley@vaco.com

Beth graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University (cum laude), with a BBA degree in Accounting. As a Raleigh area resident for 24+ years, Beth has spent 22 years working in Big 4 public accounting and Accounting Manager and Controller positions in various public and private companies. Beth utilizes her 11+ years of experience in the recruiting industry and specialization in finance and accounting direct hire placement in her role with Vaco, LLC, which she has held for eight years. Beth is active in the community and currently sits on the Board as Sponsorship Director for the Raleigh-Wake Human Resources Management Association. She has been a RWHRMA member for 5 years and has been actively involved in the local RWHRMA/SHRM Foundation Golf Tournament and the NCSHRM State Conference. She also was involved in chartering the Raleigh Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA), and is currently serving as Treasurer. Beth is a Charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church and is currently involved in mission and hunger relief efforts at Hope Community Church. Beth lives in Cary with her husband, of 27 years. They have three children, who all live and work in the local area, and two grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, needlework and country music. She has recently become an empty nester and hopes to enjoy traveling with her husband soon.

Aaron Martin has worked as a professional in human resources for over 19 years, including leadership positions with national and international restaurant chains, retailers and not-for-profit organizations. He is PHR certified and holds a Strategic Human Resource Practices certification from Cornell University. Aaron currently works as an HR Business Partner for ADP. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA degree in Communication Studies. Aaron is married to his wife Nicole and they have two children and a pet miniature schnauzer.

 

Danielle Check-Smith - 2017 SHRM Foundation Director DanielleCheck-Smith@Eaton.com

Danielle Check-Smith has been a member of SHRM for 5 years. Danielle joined RWHRMA in 2015. Danielle Check-Smith is the Senior Human Resources Generalist for the Power Quality Division’s Field Service organization at Eaton Corporation. In this role, Danielle is responsible for employee relations, projects, programs support, and organizational development of a remote workforce.  Previous to this role, Danielle was the Human Resource Generalist for the Power Quality Division responsible for providing divisional human resources support with a focus on projects, functional excellence, and divisional processes. Prior to Eaton, Danielle served in human resources roles for Sherwin-Williams, progressing in responsibility, from 2010-2013.  Danielle holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration with a Specialization in Human Resources from The Ohio State University.
