Teri Harrell, PHR
President

 

Teri graduated from Meredith College with a business degree concentrating in human resources, and has practiced HR for fourteen years.  Her previous experience includes managing HR in multiple industries including staffing, pharmaceutical and software.  She is currently the HR Manager for SCYNEXIS, Inc. When not working or volunteering, Teri enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.

SCYNEXIS, Inc. is a premier drug discovery and development company headquartered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Its scientists have extensive experience in the life sciences industry and, together and individually, have been involved in the discovery of innovative medicines over a broad range of therapy areas.

Jeff Luttrell, SPHR
Past President

The Past President serves as an advisor to the President and other officers and board members. He is also is responsible for the administration of RWHRMA’s student and professional scholarship programs

 

A North Carolina native – all the way from the coast in Wilmington—Jeff received his BA in Journalism from UNC Chapel Hill. Jeff started his professional career in the publishing and advertising world and after 8 years, he made a career change. Jeff has been a recruiter in the Raleigh and Durham areas for over 12 years. He has both staffing industry experience and corporate recruiting experience.  Jeff is currently a Senior Corporate Recruiter with the HR Services and Total Benefits Outsourcing arm within ACS, A Xerox Company, and recruits for openings in their Human Resource Services and Outsourcing division across the US. Jeff has been an active member of SHRM for over 10 years.  He has been a Board member with Raleigh-Wake for the past 4 years in the Treasurer, President Elect and President roles.  He is also a member of TSHRM and various other local organizations. In addition, Jeff serves as the District Director for Area 5 on the NCSHRM State Council.  Jeff co-chaired the Pinnacle award winning HR on Call for RWHRMA and co-chaired the 2011 NCSHRM State Conference.

Shontera Gillespie-Coleman, PHR
President Elect

The President-Elect assists the President in overseeing all chapter activities, and in his/her absence, will perform the duties of the President. The President-Elect also serves as student chapter liaison, volunteer program coordinator, and is responsible for the administration of the Robert F. McLain award. He/she will assume the office of President immediately following the term as President-Elect.

 

Shontera earned her education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, achieving a bachelor of arts degree with a concentration in industrial relations, and at Central Michigan University, receiving a master’s in human resources. Shontera is a human resources professional with over 15 years experience that has involved managing HR in multiple industries, including real estate, logistics, staffing, manufacturing, and healthcare in the areas of talent acquisition and employment.  She is currently HR Manager for the WakeMed Health & Hospital’s Talent Acquisition team, and volunteers in various capacities, including Raleigh-Wake Human Resources; Wake Chapel Church; and Knightdale-Wake Forest Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  Shontera enjoys providing community service, spending time with her family and teaching group fitness when she is not working or volunteering.

Jason Walter, MBA
VP of Programs

The VP, Programs proactively manages the development of the monthly chapter meetings/programs.  She directs and supports the activities of the programs committee and is responsible for ensuring that monthly meetings run smoothly.  The VP of Programs also prepares the monthly programs newsletter to be posted on the website.

 

Jason graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Business. After a stint as a recruiter in Raleigh, Jason worked for several years in Charlotte, NC with a third party administrator of Flexible Spending Accounts, COBRA, and self insured plans. He moved back to Raleigh in 2000 and soon thereafter began working for Parker Poe in Human Resources. He currently serves as the HR Manager for the Raleigh Parker Poe office.

Parker Poe is a business law firm located in the Southeast. Emily Hedrick, PHR
Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for completing, distributing, and maintaining organization records, including the minutes of all Board meetings.

 

A 2008 graduate from Meredith College with a Business Administration degree concentrating in Human Resources, Emily has served as the HR Generalist for R.A. Jeffreys Distributing Company for 4 years.  Emily has been an active member of Raleigh Wake since 2007, holding the Social Committee Chair position in 2009 for Raleigh Wake, and currently serving as the Secretary position for Raleigh Wake for 2011 and 2012. 

R.A. Jeffreys, headquartered in Raleigh, NC, is the largest Anheuser-Busch distributor in the State of North Carolina. The company has been a Beer and Beverage Distributor since pre-prohibition and started distributing beverage products in 1923. R.A. Jeffreys is the oldest family-owned beer distributer in North Carolina and currently employees 600 workers.

Amy Hoover, SPHR
Treasurer

The Treasurer serves as financial advisor to the chapter. He/she is responsible for managing all financial transactions of the organization, including expense and income budgeting, auditing, preparation of monthly reports, and the day-to-day maintenance of the chapter’s checking/savings accounts and investments.  She provides timely monthly reports on the financial status of the organization and is responsible for scheduling an independent audit of chapter financial records every 2-3 years.

 

Amy holds a Master’s in Business Administration and has been an HR leader in both non-profit and for-profit organizations for over 13 years. For over five years Amy has lead the human resource operations for US and Canada at Arysta LifeSceince North America, the largest privately held crop care solutions company, located in Cary NC.  A member of Raleigh-Wake for over 15 years, Amy has served as in various leadership roles, including serving as Chapter President, and was awarded the distinguished Robert F McLain Award in recognition for her continued support and commitment in advancing the HR profession, serving the HR professional, and contributing to the community.

Kendra Pearson
Communications Director

This director works with her committee to ensure that the RWHRMA website is managed and maintained on a regular basis.  She oversees website upgrades and improvement projects as well as the delivery of the monthly newsletter.  She also works closely with all the board members to ensure that information on the website is updated regularly and the site is effective in providing information, links and news to our members and visitors.   

 

Kendra holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of  Mary Washington, and is currently enrolled in Wake Technical Community College’s Human Resource Management Certificate Program. Kendra serves as a consultant in the human resources industry, and is passionate about helping companies recruit and retain A-level talent as they emerge out of these challenging economic times. Kendra has been with NAS Recruitment Communications since 2004, and currently oversees their North Carolina operations. She is an active member of RWHRMA, SHRM and NCAHCR.  When not geeking out on HR related topics, Kendra enjoys reading, watching movies, traveling, listening to Motown music and spending time with her husband, Justin, and her adorable and incredibly spoiled dog, Casey.

Theresa Lough, PHR, SPHR
Certification Director

This Director plans and implements the chapter's certification study groups.  She is responsible for educating members regarding HRCI certification, promoting certification/recertification, and recognizing newly certified members.  She also administers the two certification scholarships for members.

 

Theresa earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from San Diego State University, and has served as an HR Consultant contracting with various corporations. In addition to her leadership role with RWHRMA, she is an active member of the NC Business Group on Health and has recently been invited to work with UnitedHealthcare on their Customer Advisory Committee. Theresa is currently the Human Resources Manager for Smith Debnam, a full-service law firm located in Raleigh. In her role with the firm, she works with firm management to develop annual strategic goals for HR including workforce planning and development, employee relations, benefits, compensation, training, HRIS system, policies and procedures, compliance, COBRA and FMLA management. Theresa also developed the firm’s wellness program, which won a “Healthiest Employer” award from the Triangle Business Journal. Theresa lives in Raleigh with her husband and their two sons.

Christin Kiel, PHR
VP of Membership

This director manages the membership function of the chapter and develops strategies to recruit new members. She receives and reviews membership applications and presents them to the Board of Directors at each month’s meeting, plans prospective member events, and maintains the membership roster.

 

Christin graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a dual bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and Political Science. Christin is currently the HR and Operations Manager for rPath, Inc.  An active member of RWHRMA, Christin has served as Membership Administrator (2008 – 2011), AVP Membership (2011) and currently serves as VP Membership. When she is not working or volunteering, Christin enjoys cooking, traveling, art, animals (especially her two 'children', Cody & Oliver!)

Ginny Phillips
College Relations Director

The Director is responsible for ensuring implementation and development of the PACT program.  She fosters communication with local student chapters and serves as the primary contact for student chapter leaders for the coordination of activities that address activities required for SHRM Student Merit Awards.  The Director is responsible for developing RWHRMA initiatives in collaboration with chapter advisors that promote the goals and objectives of local chapters and provide opportunities to develop leadership skills, promote career development, and expand upon the foundation of HR knowledge taught in the classroom. 

Ginny Phillips graduated from Meredith College with a degree in Business Administration and a concentration in Human Resources.  She received her PHR certification in 2011 and has been a Raleigh-Wake Human Resource Management Association member for six years with the past two years on the RWHRMA board as College Relations Director. Ginny works currently at Luihn Food Systems, Inc. where she is the HR Representative for 80+ restaurants. Luihn Food Systems, Inc. a franchisee of YUM! Brands and Hurricane Grill and Wings the company has been in business since 1966 and cover three states.

Arlene Roane, GPHR
Diversity Director

The Director promotes diversity in the organization by developing chapter diversity initiatives, planning diversity programs, and spearheading the effort to increase diversity among RWHRMA’s membership and leadership.   She will work with the VP of Programs to ensure that at least on monthly program focuses on this core area.

Arlene Roane has over 25 years of executive consulting and corporate leadership experience in a range of industries including manufacturing, communications, IT/software development, banking, consumer products, retailing and healthcare. Recent clients include Parker, Marathon Petroleum, PwC, LG&E/Kentucky Utilities, Kroger and Sisters of Charity Health System. As a highly sought after keynote speaker, facilitator and trainer on diversity/inclusion and global talent development. Arlene has trained over 15,000 professionals in multi-national, regional and local organizations.

Phil Strach
Government Affairs Director

This director serves as legislative advocate for the chapter.   He communicates legislative action information to membership, initiates action in response to legislative alerts, and coordinates chapter legislative activities such as lobbying and letter-writing to elected officials.  He will work closely with the SHRM government Affairs department and State Council Legislative Director to educate and advocate legislative issues in our state as well as nationally.

Denise Barton, SPHR
Workforce Readiness Director

This director serves as an advocate for workforce readiness chapter activities by: partnering with local schools to share information, identifying and evaluating issues that impact workforce readiness, and monitoring local activities concerning workforce readiness. 

 

Denise is an experienced Administrator, Professor, Business Professional, and Community Leader with extensive experience advising senior administrators and employees on management, organizational development, employment law, diversity and inclusion, and leadership coaching. Her multiple roles have included teaching human resources at the Campbell-RTP Campus for many years, serving as a full-time faculty member with Wake Tech, as well as consulting under HR Fusion, LLC. She also serves as Director of Human Capital Development for Wake Business Advisory Council and is on the steering committee for Raleigh Colleges and Community Collaborative (RCCC), a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grant.

Community Services Director

This director will identify and recommend community service projects to be supported by the chapter.  She will also make chapter members aware of community organizations that would be beneficial to HR professionals or businesses.

 

After graduating from Peace College with a degree in Human Resources (Summa Cum Laude), Kathy completed her Master of Business Administration, with Honors, from Meredith College. Kathy spent several years in the retail sector as Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Vice President of Stores at The Body Shop and at The Cato Corporation before beginning a second career in teaching at the college level.  She spent eight years as a Senior Instructor at Peace College, where she was also the Program Coordinator for the HR Degree Program, as well as the Faculty Advisor for the Peace Student SHRM Chapter.  She enjoys time with her family and traveling, most of all to Italy.

Beth Shandley
Sponsorship Director

This Director actively seeks potential sponsors to raise funds to support the chapter’s operations.  She builds relationships with the sponsors to identify effective opportunities for marketing their services.  She works closely with other Board of Director members to create and evaluate sponsorships programs.

 

Beth graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University (cum laude), with a BBA degree in Accounting. As a Raleigh area resident for 24+ years, Beth has spent 20+ years working in Big 4 public accounting and Accounting Manager and Controller positions in various public and private companies. Beth utilizes her almost 10 years of experience in the recruiting industry and specialization in finance and accounting direct hire placement in her role with Vaco, LLC, which she has held for six years. Beth is active in the community and currently sits on the Board as Sponsorship Director for the Raleigh-Wake Human Resources Management Association. She has been a RWHRMA member for 3+ years and has been actively involved in the local RWHRMA/SHRM Foundation Golf Tournament and the NCSHRM State Conference. She also was involved in chartering the Raleigh Chapter of the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA), and is currently serving as Treasurer.  Beth lives in Cary with her husband.  They have three children, who all live and work in the local area, and one grandson.  She enjoys spending time with family, traveling and reading.

This director is the point of contact for all members interested in getting involved in the Chapter. She maintains a database of all current volunteers and maintains the Chapter Organizational Chart.

 

Tracy earned a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and a Master’s degree from North Carolina Central University.
